You finish a mix, the bass is deep and solid in the room, and then you play it on your phone and the low end has simply gone. Not quieter. Gone. The track sounds hollow, the kick has no weight, and the groove stops making sense.
This is not a mixing mistake in the usual sense, and turning the bass up will not fix it. It is physics, and once you know what is actually happening the solution is straightforward.
Why it happens
A speaker produces low frequencies by moving a lot of air. A phone speaker is a few millimetres across and cannot move much air at all, so its output falls off a cliff somewhere around 300 to 500 Hz. A laptop is a little better, an earbud is a little better again, but none of them reproduce a 40 or 50 Hz sine wave in any meaningful sense.
So when your sub bass is a clean, pure low sine, which is exactly what a lot of production advice tells you to aim for, you have written a part that a large share of your listeners will never hear a single moment of.
The trick the ear plays for you
Here is the useful part. Pitch perception does not depend on the fundamental frequency being present. If a note at 50 Hz has harmonics at 100, 150 and 200 Hz, and you remove the 50 Hz entirely, most listeners still hear a note at 50 Hz. The brain reconstructs it from the spacing of the harmonics. This is called the missing fundamental, and it is why a bass line can survive a telephone.
You are not trying to make a small speaker play low. You are giving the ear enough to infer the low.
So the goal is not more sub. It is a sub that has controlled harmonic content sitting above it, in the range small speakers can actually reproduce.
What to do about it
- Add harmonics, not level. Saturate a duplicate of the bass, high-pass that copy at around 150 to 200 Hz, and blend it under the clean sub. The clean sub does the work on big systems, the saturated copy does the work everywhere else.
- Keep the sub mono and short. Wide, long low notes eat headroom and smear. A mono sub that stops when the note stops leaves room for everything else.
- Check the octave. A bass line written an octave too low is the most common version of this problem. Moving it up an octave often solves everything at once and costs nothing on a big system, because the harmonics are already where they need to be.
- Give the kick and bass separate jobs. If both occupy the same 40 to 60 Hz window, neither survives the translation. Let the kick own the very bottom and the bass own the harmonics, or the other way round, but not both.
- Audition on the worst speaker you own. Not as a final check, but while you are writing the part. It is the fastest feedback loop in music production and it costs nothing.
The shortcut
Doing this by hand every time means duplicating tracks, matching gain, and keeping the saturated copy in tune with the clean one as the part moves. What frequency can a phone speaker actually play?
Most phone speakers roll off steeply somewhere between 300 and 500 Hz, and laptop speakers are not far behind. Anything below that is not quiet on those devices, it is absent.
What is the missing fundamental?
If you play the harmonics of a note without the note itself, the ear reconstructs the pitch anyway. That is why a 50 Hz bass line is still audible as a bass line on a speaker that cannot produce 50 Hz, provided the harmonics above it are there.
Should I just boost the low end more?
No. Boosting energy the speaker cannot reproduce makes the track muddy and quiet on real systems while changing nothing on the phone. Add harmonics above the sub instead of more sub.
Do I need expensive monitors to get this right?
No, but you do need to check on something small. Most bass mistakes are caught faster on a laptop speaker or a phone than on monitors, because the small speaker tells you immediately whether the note survives.
