NES, Game Boy, C64: What Each Sound Chip Actually Sounds Like

People say "8-bit" as if it were one sound. It was at least five, and the differences between them are the whole reason a track reads as Nintendo rather than Commodore.

"8-bit" gets used as though it described one sound. It does not. The machines of that era each had a different set of voices, different limits and different failures, and those differences are exactly what makes a track sound like a Nintendo game rather than a Commodore one. If you are writing chip music and it keeps landing in a generic retro place, the usual reason is that you have not picked a machine.

Here is what each of the big ones actually gave you.

NES (Ricoh 2A03) - the sound people mean

Five channels: two pulse waves, one triangle, one noise, and a crude sample channel that most games barely used. The pulse channels carry the melody and harmony with a handful of duty-cycle settings, the triangle holds the bass with no volume control at all, and the noise channel is the entire drum kit.

The two details that give it away: the triangle bass cannot fade, so it either plays at full level or stops, and the drums have to steal the triangle channel for their pitched thump. That constant handing back and forth between bass and kick is the NES fingerprint.

Game Boy (DMG) - the same idea, hollowed out

Four channels: two pulse waves, one programmable wave channel, one noise. The important swap is the wave channel replacing the NES triangle. You could load your own 32-step waveform into it, which is why Game Boy basses buzz and hum rather than thud, and why handheld music has a slightly thinner, more nasal centre.

It is also the machine with the strongest live scene, because a Game Boy running LSDJ is a functioning instrument you can carry.

Commodore 64 (SID) - the one that is really a synth

Three voices, but each with selectable waveforms including sawtooth, a proper ADSR envelope, ring modulation, oscillator sync, and a genuine analogue multimode filter shared across the chip. That last part is why C64 music can sweep and growl.

Practically, it means SID tracks sound less like beeps and more like a small, aggressive analogue synth with too few voices. Composers compensated for having only three by writing extremely fast arpeggios, which became the signature.

The C64 had a filter. That single fact separates it from every Nintendo chip of the era.

Sega Genesis and Mega Drive (YM2612) - not 8-bit at all

Six channels of FM synthesis, plus a leftover square-wave chip for extra tones and noise. FM builds sound by having oscillators modulate each other rather than by filtering a rich waveform, so the palette runs to metallic basses, glassy bells and slap-bass tones. If a retro track sounds aggressive and brassy rather than blocky, it is almost certainly a Genesis reference.

SNES (SPC700) - samples, not synthesis

Eight channels of sample playback with a hardware reverb, running on very little memory. That constraint is the sound: everything is a heavily compressed short sample looped and pitched, which gives SNES music its soft, slightly blurred, reverberant quality. It is the one 16-bit machine people rarely mistake for anything else.

How to use this when you write

Pick a machine before you pick a plugin, and then honour its limits:

  • NES. Two melodic voices maximum. Bass drops out under every kick. No filter sweeps, ever.
  • Game Boy. Same discipline, but a buzzier bass and no triangle thud.
  • C64. Three voices, but use the filter hard and write arpeggios fast enough to imply chords.
  • Genesis. FM patches and a real bass guitar attitude. Stop trying to make it square.
  • SNES. Short samples, generous reverb, and let things blur.

Which console sound is the "classic" 8-bit sound?

Was the Game Boy really the same as the NES?

Why does Commodore 64 music sound so different?
