How to Make 8-Bit Drums Without a Sample Pack

The old consoles built a whole drum kit out of one noise channel and a falling triangle wave. Do it that way and your chip drums will tune to the song instead of fighting it.

Most people building chiptune drums reach for a sample pack, and then spend the rest of the session fighting it. The snare is in the wrong key, the kick has no weight under the lead, and nothing quite locks. The original hardware did not have that problem, because it did not have samples. It had one noise channel and a triangle wave, and every drum you remember from a console game was made out of those two things in real time.

Doing it the same way is not nostalgia for its own sake. It means every drum in your kit can be tuned, shortened and reshaped for the specific song, which is exactly what a sample cannot do.

The two ingredients

A chip drum kit is built from:

  • Noise, gated by a very fast envelope, for hats, snares and anything that hisses. Pitch the noise up for a hat, down for a snare body.
  • A pitch-bent tone, usually a triangle or square, falling fast from a high note to a low one, for kicks and toms. The bend is the drum. Without it you have a bass note.

That is the whole vocabulary. What follows is how to get each piece of the kit out of it.

The kick

Take a triangle or sine wave. Set the amp envelope to instant attack and a decay of roughly 80 to 120 milliseconds, no sustain. Now add a pitch envelope that starts about two octaves up and falls to the root in around 30 milliseconds. That fast fall is the click and the punch. Longer than 50 milliseconds and it turns into a tom.

On the real hardware this was played on the triangle channel, which meant the bass had to stop for the length of the kick. That gap is a huge part of why old game music breathes the way it does, and it is worth copying deliberately rather than treating as a limitation you have escaped.

The snare

Two layers. Noise with a decay around 120 to 180 milliseconds for the body, and underneath it a short pitched tone falling roughly a fifth, about 60 milliseconds long, to give it a centre. Filter the noise so it is not full-range white hiss; something around 2 to 6 kHz reads as a snare, above that it turns into a hat.

The fall is the drum. A tone that does not fall is just a note.

Hats

Noise again, with a decay of 20 to 40 milliseconds for a closed hat and 150 to 250 for an open one. High-pass it hard, somewhere around 6 to 8 kHz. The single most useful trick here is varying the decay by a few milliseconds between hits rather than varying the volume. On real hardware the length was the expressive control, and it still reads that way.

Toms and percussion

The kick recipe with a slower pitch fall and a higher landing note. Three toms tuned a fourth apart, all using the same patch, will cover almost any fill you want to write. For odd percussion, take the noise voice and give it a pitch envelope too, which the original chips could do and which sounds like nothing else.

Making it sit in a modern track

Chip drums are thin by design, and that becomes a problem the moment they share a mix with anything recorded this decade. Three things fix most of it:

  • Saturation, not EQ. A little tape or console colour adds harmonics that make a synthesized kick audible on small speakers. Our Tincture is built for exactly that job, but any saturator will do.
  • Keep it narrow. Chip drums panned wide stop sounding like hardware immediately. Mono, or very close to it.
  • Almost no reverb. The consoles had none. A short room on the snare only, if anything at all.

Doing this without patching a synth every time

All of the above is achievable in any DAW with any synth, and it is worth building once by hand so you understand what each control is doing. It is also slow. The point either way is the same. Chip drums that are synthesized can follow the song. Chip drums that are sampled can only be trimmed, and you will feel the difference the first time you change key.

Common questions

Can I make 8-bit drums with a normal synth?

Yes. Any synth with a noise oscillator and a fast amp envelope will do the hats and snares, and any synth with a triangle or sine wave plus a pitch envelope will do the kick and toms. That is the entire method.

Why do sample packs make chip drums sound wrong?

They do not sound wrong, they sound fixed. A sampled chip snare was tuned to whatever key it was recorded in, so in a different song it either clashes or gets buried. Synthesized drums move with the track.

How many drum channels did the NES actually have?

One noise channel, plus whatever you could steal from the triangle channel between bass notes. Everything you remember as an NES drum kit came out of that.

What tempo and note length should chip drums use?

Short. Almost all of these sounds are under 150 milliseconds, and the hats are under 40. If a chip drum rings, it stops sounding like hardware.
